GET TO KNOW THE COUPLE BEHIND VELDT

BECAUSE KNOWING THE FACE BEHING THE COMPANY YOU HIRE IS IMPORTANT!
We’re JJ and Sune—high school sweethearts, business partners, and proud parents to our fur baby, Kevin (who definitely thinks he’s the boss). We met at church, went to the same high school, and never left each other’s side. JJ was born in South Africa and raised in New Zealand, while Sune grew up in South Africa before finding her way to NZ. Together, we’ve built a life full of adventure, laughter, and late-night wedding pack-downs.
We love the outdoors, good company, and throwing a great party. Our journey has been anything but ordinary—balancing JJ’s dream of owning a business with Sune’s pursuit of a science degree—but we wouldn’t have it any other way. And yes, Kevin is in almost every renovation photo, usually photobombing with a toy in his mouth.

Meet JJ
JJ is the original dreamer behind the bar, literally. At just 19, he built his first bar on his parents’ deck, quickly outgrowing the garage as his vision took shape. Born in South Africa and raised in New Zealand, JJ brings a Kiwi vibe with a South African work ethic. With six years of hospitality experience and two years in alcohol sales at Asahi Beverages, he knows the industry inside and out.
JJ is the builder, barista, bartender, and the brains behind our mobile setups. He’s passionate about creating affordable, high-quality experiences, because everyone deserves an epic event, no matter the budget. He’s not big on drinking cocktails, but he loves crafting them (with Sune as the official taste tester). Meet the boss, the builder, and the beverage wizard, JJ.

Meet Sune
Sune is the creative spark behind Veldt Events, the one who turned our brand from “corporate confusion” into “Pinterest perfection.” She’s the eye behind every beautiful setup, the strategist behind every smooth event, and the glue that keeps JJ (and the business) grounded. With over five years in hospitality, from bar staff to general manager, she brings both style and substance.
Sune is currently studying a Bachelor of Science while running Veldt full-time, proof that she’s not just a pretty face, but a powerhouse. Without her, our logo would’ve been made in Microsoft Publisher and our name would’ve come from one of JJ’s shower thoughts. Sune is the reason our events feel personal, polished, and unforgettable.

WHERE DOES VELDT COME FROM?
Veldt’, meaning ‘field’ in Afrikaans, portrays a blank canvas and a fresh start. We can take an empty Veldt, transforming it into an amazing space for you and your guests, leaving nothing but memories behind when we’re done.
But a Veldt doesn’t have to be just a field. Veldt speaks to our ability to take something naturally beautiful, like a ‘Veldt’, and transform it into something so much more, bringing your vision to life.
Starting as JJs Bar service, we’ve expanded beyond a bar service. While we can still guarantee an exceptional bar service, we aim to help you with so much more. Our ever-expanding service seeks to fill any gaps in your big picture.
Why Est 2021
What started in a garage as JJ’s Bar Service in 2021 has grown into Veldt Events—complete with a caravan bar and a growing list of weddings and functions. From casual backyard beginnings to a full-time passion, we’re proud of how far we’ve come—and we’re just getting started.
2021

Veldt began in 2021 as a humble dream called JJ’s Bar Service. With nothing more than a vision and a few tools, JJ built his first bar on his parents’ deck, eventually taking over the garage as his ambition outgrew the space. He started bartending for friends and family at birthdays and backyard parties, slowly collecting equipment and experience. That same year, he constructed the first section of our now-iconic black bar and began experimenting with branding, though, in hindsight, letting JJ handle the branding may not have been our finest decision. JJ had just graduated high school and left university to pursue his dream while Sune was still in school, cheering him on from the sidelines. It was the beginning of something special, even if we didn’t quite know it yet.
2022

In 2022, we took our first official leap into the events world with a 50th birthday celebration in someone’s backyard. That moment marked the start of something real. We also did a photoshoot with Triple Smooth Photography—our favorite photographer to this day—which helped us capture the heart of our brand. Later that year, we attended our first Bride & Groom Wedding Expo, partnering with Batched, a premium liquor company. The response was overwhelming and affirming; people loved what we were offering, and we knew we were on the right path. The demand pushed us to expand our bar setup, so JJ built the back section of the bar and a custom sink unit. By the end of the year, we had completed four official events and were buzzing with excitement for what was to come.
2023

2023 was the year we truly found our voice and our look. JJ finally handed over the branding reins to Sune, and the transformation was instant. Our new aesthetic was playful, polished, and perfectly us, and it resonated with brides in a big way. We kicked off the wedding season with bookings from the previous year’s expo and even had our first double booking on the same day. That milestone meant we needed a second bar, so JJ built the white bar, and we doubled our inventory—glasses, stock, and all. We also launched our Cocktail Masterclass, hosted at the local café we were working at, which added a new layer to our offerings. With two wedding expos under our belt and a growing client list, 2023 was the year we stepped into our own.
2024

In 2024, we took a bold step forward by purchasing and renovating Alfie, our beloved coffee caravan. We launched “Alfie on the Go” and focused on getting him into as many local markets as possible. At the same time, we didn’t slow down on the bar side of things—in fact, we had our busiest wedding season yet, often running both Alfie and our mobile bars at the same time. We also dipped our toes into the corporate world, catering events for the National Party and the Aotango Showcase. This was the first year we were able to showcase both of our bars at a wedding expo, and the response was incredible. Alfie brought a new energy to our brand, and we loved watching him become a crowd favorite.
2025

2025 has been our most exciting and challenging year yet—and we’re only halfway through. We kicked off the wedding season with a bang, pulling off three weddings in one day for the first time, thanks to Alfie’s versatility. Alfie continued to shine at local markets, serving up coffee and charm in equal measure. With the workload growing and Sune studying full-time, JJ made the big decision to leave his job at Asahi Beverages to focus on Veldt full-time. We’ve continued to grow our corporate portfolio, working with clients like Amazon Web Services and NDC, and we’ve even completed weddings that featured both Alfie and our bar setups. This year also marked our official rebrand to Veldt Events—a name that reflects our expanded vision and evolving identity. We’ve done more photoshoots, booked more weddings, and are gearing up for another wedding expo in July. The journey is just getting started, and we’re more inspired than ever.
